Yeah... a little part of me remembered that some of the remaining Dual sites (and I could count em on one hand) were on Geocities...

Use the Archive.org... all I can suggest if you knew the URL.

Looks like they close one server after another now.

Anyway, I just made it in time to save the english-korean-Baronh dictionary. It wasn't saved by Archive.org so I will try to sent it to them in the next day when the lines are better.

Sorry, I dunno about the Dual url.

    When did this happen?
Besides Dual there were a lot of other good anime related sites on
    Geocities.

    Monday or Tuesday this week.

Yeah... agreed there... much will be lost... even from the Tenchi community.

It's already over. They had announced it months ago but IMHO very quietly and unnoticed for most people.

Yep, geocities was special. Most websites had been done with love, seriousness, and a lot of concise and good information. You can't find these anywhere except some other also early sites like angelfire, tripod, fortunecity and other small towns. These days most webpages are just slapped together with info from everywhere but not much worth and with high probability of being wrong. The rest are blogs, a lot of chatting and twitting but no long term worthy info. Exceptions are rare.

I remember geocities from my first computer days on the internet just before it was bought by yahoo.
It was what wikipedia, bittorrents, blogging, and social network is today.
When yahoo bought it and introduced all the ads, it really put a limit to my visits there...

    It's a big lost.
On the other side I'm glad Angelfire is still around and hoepfully healthy for a while longer.

Speaking of these kinds of sites...

What's the best for making your own custom site?

I was wanting to make an over glorified myspace profile, seeing as how myspace is piss poor on the customization & HTML parts.

Well, if you want to create great webapages then sooner or later you will come down to code some by hand. Simply because it's more efficient, easier to read and uses less space.
You will understand when you get serious into it.

    Resource tips
There was once a great fqa called myHtml but someone stole the name for their software it seems. I can only find the german version.(strange it seems only they got it now)
    myHtml selfhtml
    english basic html
There are many html editors that will help newcomers to create webpages:
    Kompozer
    html kit
    Coffeecup

most will add extra code, so mind you
Like any other programming things, try, test, see, and learn.
If you want something specific you can often find solutions on the net. Or ask us here.

I had used Kompozer briefly before.... you also have the option of making a
free blog, which would serve your basic intentions for your page.

Yes, blogging is a good alternative if you want to express yourself and share whatever.

I personally prefer forums for discussion because here I'm on equal footing where as a blog is rather selfcentered and people just come by and may leave some comment.
Some more need to read tips/rules about webpages
    10 rules
    9 essentials

These are good if you are new. I admit I never got to read (didn't existed) or used them but as it so happens I came to do things right. (Probably because of my efficiency view as well as common sense.)

    Edit:
Because of the closing of many sites within this and last year I had been playing with the thought of expanding my webpages to more sites than ever before including extensive semi-webpages within blogging. I guess I should try it out anyway. *shrugs*

The main reason why I'd like to make a site is for experimentation and showing a place where I already have FAQs.

Do you know how many times I've had to tell my friends about Battleflag of the Stars?
I'd like to have a site where they can go and just read about why I enjoy it...things like that.

Also, I know HTML, I've taken 2 class and have been experimenting with it by myself for some time.
Blogs are cute and all, but most of them are HTML retarded.

I enjoy making my own tables, using "HTML2" like the 'role your mouse over a word and a picture loads - but not a pop-up.
    Things like that.

Still, those two lists are interesting.
And I already use 'Dreamweaver' along with notepad, but again thanks for the post.

Good. I wasn't sure how much help you needed.
Then you only need to look for the hosting sites you want, and put up your design.
Last time I looked (6+ months) ago many had annoying ads, it's really difficult to find a good place these days.

All my sites are basictly ancients, although they did have dthml features, star trek navigation pads and other advanced java stuff since the beginning. My abh mod site is the latest design I have, although based on the same old, though. I haven't tried the latest html yet (it doesn't seem to have much relevant improvement.

So far as I can tell HTML2 is more or less to make things prettier.

I was thinking of buying a domain name, but I'm still on the fence on how much I want to sink into a personal site.

Well, if you ask me the worth of a good website is:
    1. good information people, do want to look up
    2. good design, not always but if you make it easy for people to navigate to the information the better
just make it so people like to use your site instead of other similar one.
    3. long term existence

If you want to try use Angelfire!

    Edit:
    Tips for WebHosting sites
One more thing, usually you tend to expand your webpage once you start doing it, so take that into account when designing the structure of your webpage. I found it good to have a general main index file from which people can go further to the more specific theme.
That way I don't have to change everything, only the main index file. And just add a new 'branch' below it.

    Edit:
www.freewebpage.org is cheaper than Angelfire, but the filesize limitations even when you pay are a bit strange. Read the posts, for some reason many people complain despite its rating.
Angelfire is better on bandwidth in general and accessiblity.
    freewebpage review
    Angelfire review

    Edit:
I went throught their top list. I noticed many posts have similar wording, only the long ones seemed real. Anyway, I found many have the same limitations
-file size; honestly I can't live with 1MB limit; that's were the worthy distribution size begins; my html are about 300kB (hand coded)
    -file format restriction
-no activity time limit; no good!
Angelfire has none of these, and you can get rid of ads with an easy trick like I did. That's why I chose it from the very beginning.
Anyway, I found 110mb to be very likeable. I think I will try it myself.

Yeah, without the ads many webpages were treasures and still were great.
At the time Lycos was the best, google wasn't much until 2000. Most other things only happened on newsnet/usenet and ftp.
Geocities was third in number of visiters, meaning pretty much everyone came by every day at least once.

Yahoo just left it dead, never doing anything. If they had build it out to be something like social network of today, it might still be the biggest community, bigger than anything you know today for sure.

I just came across this topic, thought of why they had to close. Geocities was free hosting in exchange for ads shows/clicks if i get it right. I'm not too familiar with social networks but i guess it means blog type of thing? Not sure cuz i don't visit em often - finding anything there is pain since there's no real navigation - just a mess of posts.. I believe such things should be separated. I get tired of searching for some artist's brushes among hundreds of his posts about latest movie/coffee/ singer etc. But static content sure won't bring many visitors and banner clicks/shows meaning low $ while blog (no matter how absurd) is constantly updated with a lot more people visiting.

I guess the future of internet is mix of both...
