    FTP Help Please

Post by JGZinv on 4/26/2010, 11:19 am

Ok, so up until about the 1st of March I wasn't having any issues.
    I
could login to said FTP address with either my CoreFTP or using Windows
    itself.

Since then, I get nothing but timeouts, connection
    errors, could not connect errors,
    an existing connection was forcibly
    closed by the remote host...etc.

Things I've tried to narrow it
    down by:

Using 2 different computers (Vista vs. XP).
    Using 3
    different FTP clients.
Using no firewall as well as being put in the
    DMZ.
Using alternate ports for secure FTP.
    Resetting my modem to
    get a new IP.
Using a web based FTP client.

    Now the odd thing
is that I cannot login, but other people can.
So I'm the odd one out.

    Also
    tried http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/
    and I'm not sure
it was designed with FTP in mind, but it claims
    the URL is unreachable.

    Furthermore, I've tried doing a tracert -
which dies as soon as it reaches
    the FTP host's first hop.

    So
the only conclusion I have at this time is possibly my cable company or

the FTP host itself. Are there any other tools or methods I'm
    missing that might
help in this regard? Don't really have an
alternative means of Internet access to
    see if it's provider
specific, least not for a solid week.

I'm using total commander which comes with it's own ftp options/tools. Then there is FileZillaFTP client.

I haven't been usinf ftp for ages, hmmm, since I gave up usenet. actually.

Let me guess, using some client you paste the url, username and password. It connects but never logs in. My guess is the url or rather the ftp server does not accept coded url commands, eg. xxx.x.x.x.xxx.xxx:80/pub/
In this case, you have to use the clean url or try using the terminal. Laughing
(this happens with any ftp client)

Uhm, I find it odd that tracert dies on you. You can try http://www.g6ftpserver.com/en/ftptest to test the server connection.

I've tried different clients already. This is a FTP account I've been using for about 4 years.

That link coming up with this:

    * About to connect() to
    peso.dreamhost.com port 21

    *
    Trying 208.113.248.241... connected

    * Connected to peso.dreamhost.com
    (208.113.248.241) port 21

    *
    FTP response reading failed

    * Closing connection #0

    I just checked.
I got the same. My tracert gets to 13 hops after which it's all timeout.
    Terminal ftp says connection timeout.
    Total commander: connect call failed.
I also used the normal http://www.uptimeinspector.com/test-server-connection.html www server check: 500 Can't connect to peso.dreamhost.com:80 (connect: timeout)

It must be the host/server. I dunno what else could be wrong.
